Announcing Scottsdale's "38th Anniversary ArtWalk"

When cooler winds begin to blow, the Scottsdale Gallery Association will celebrate its 38th year with a brand new event they call their Anniversary ArtWalk. They’ll have great gallery shows, live art demonstrations, tasty foods to sample, and lively music on the streets as usual. It all happens on Thursday, Oct. 18. But stay tuned for more details – some even bigger plans are in the making! Until then, Scottsdale ArtWalk continues year-round every Thursday night from 7 to 9pm. Plan your evening in advance by viewing individual gallery activities at ScottsdaleGalleries.com.

Worth the trip: Grand Canyon Celebration of Art
Grand Canyon Association

The Grand Canyon Association is readying for its 4th Annual Grand Canyon Celebration of Art at Grand Canyon National Park. This event features 26 artists from around the country who have created a studio piece for the exhibition and will paint plein air during the week before the exhibit opens. Visitors will have the opportunity to watch the artists paint as they seek to represent the shifting light and shadow, amazing land forms, and vibrant colors of this vast landscape. Artists will be at the North and South Rims and, for the first time this year at Phantom Ranch and Indian Garden, from September 8 to September 12. This will be followed by a two-month exhibition and sale at famed, rim-hugging Kolb Studio just west of Bright Angel Lodge from Sept. 15 - Nov. 25. Proceeds from the event will support the goal of funding an art collection venue at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. For full details, visit www.grandcanyon.org/celebration.asp

Local songwriter Mike Russell rocks on new CD

Local rock group The Mike Russell Band has aced it on their new album, This Time. Russell’s no newcomer, but always delivers as a solid songwriter with a survivor’s perspective and a penchant for chunky hooks. He surrounds himself with some of the strongest bandmembers in town, too, led by guitarist Ronnie Winters and drummer Gary Bruzzese, with Joe Schofield on bass. The title track “This Time” is certainly worthy of airplay and hard to get out of your head. Good stuff. You can check out a copy at local stores like Stinkweeds and Revolver. – bob henschen

Zen and Sand Joined as Poignant Images on Film

Be sure to catch an amazing photography exhibit at Fair Trade Café thru July 28. “Initiation” is a series by Turkish-born photographer Cansu Bulgu who first created unique “zen and sand” illustrations and then captured them on film…before the sea washed them away. Simple, pure, inspiring. The coffee’s equally deep and memorable. Fair Trade Café is located at the northwest corner of Roosevelt and Central in downtown Phoenix. More info at www.CansuBulgu.com.
